MY SON, REMEMBER THIS

Well, son, I tell you:
Life for me ain’t been a crystal stair.
It’s had tracks in it,
And splinters,
And board torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor.
But all the time,
I’ve been climbin’ on,
And reachin’ landings,
And turnin’ corners,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
where there ain’t been any light.

So, my lil boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t set down on the steps
‘Cause you might find it’s kinda hard.
So don’t ever fall down—
For I’ll still be goin’, my son,
I’ll still be climbin’ just for you,
Even if life for me ain’t been a crystal stair.
